Back at the turn of the 20th century (1899-1904), eminent German biologist Ernst Haeckel published a collection of 100 prints of a wide spectrum of organisms in a 10 volume set called Art Forms of Nature (Kunstformen der Natur). Many of those creatures were first described by Haeckel and provided a basis for his effort to map a genealogical tree of life. In addition to his significant contributions to biology, he was noted for being an advocate for the theories of Charles Darwin and for helping to popularize them in Germany. Below is a small sampling from his remarkable naturalistic art work, the entire collection of which is now available on Wikimedia Commons.
